The Land That Time Forgot

By Edgar Rice Burroughs

About This Book

The ship: a submarine lost in the ocean. The men: strong enough, and brave enough, to tackle anything. The woman: beautiful and desirable. And in the strange land where they found themselves . . .

"Look!" cried Olson. "Would you look at the giraffe comin' up out o' the bottom of the sea?" We looked in the direction he pointed and saw a long, glossy neck surmounted by a small head rising above the surface of the river. Presently the back of the creature was exposed, brown and glossy as the water dripped from it. It turned its eyes upon us, opened its lizard-like mouth, emitted a shrill hiss and came for us. The thing must have been sixteen or eighteen feet in length and closely resembled pictures I had seen of restored plesiosaurs of the lower Jurassic. It charged us as savagely as a mad bull . . .

About Edgar Rice Burroughs

(1875-1950) The Chicago-born creator of one of the best-loved (and often parodied) adventure characters, "Tarzan of the Apes," Edgar Rice Burroughs had also been a soldier, a business executive, a gold miner, a cowboy, and a policeman. After writing "Tarzan" in 1914, he produced more than 20 sequels which were translated into more than 50 languages, and which formed the basis of dozens of films. In 1917, Burroughs also created the character of John Carter of Mars, plus many other adventure tales with a science fiction theme.
