No Miracle To Saving Gasoline

< Prev Tip | Next Tip >

When gasoline prices rise, most of us start looking for ways to use less gas (other than by not driving so much, that is!) Although there are practical steps we can take to increase gas mileage, the Federal Trade Commission warns us to be wary of any gas-saving claims for automotive devices or oil and gas additives. Even for the few gas-saving products that have been found to work, the FTC suggest that savings are small.

So be suspicious of miracle "Gas-Saving" advertising that claims to "improve fuel economy by 20 percent," for example. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has evaluated or tested more than 100 alleged gas-saving devices and has not found any product that significantly improves gas mileage. In fact, some "gas-saving" products may damage a car's engine or cause substantial increases in exhaust emissions. So it kind of comes down to pay more or - awwww! You know!

A short column this time. I'm just out-of-gas...

That's it for this issue.
