Letter: 18

June 14,

I STARTED this letter a few days ago. Since then it has turned pretty hot — in the upper 90s. My back yard was getting burned some but I watered it real well yesterday and it greened right up. From now on we will have quite a lot of hot weather. It has been cooling off nicely at night. I don't like to sleep in too hot weather.

Craig is still in Montana. I have been feeding the dogs but not doing much of anything else for them. They sure like table scraps with their dog food.

Since I am doing my own lawn mowing I thought the 17-year-old "pusher" type power mower has served its purpose and have ordered a new one from Sears Roebuck. They were out of stock of the one I wanted. I will now have a self propelled mower when I get it.

Sunday my telephone quit working. I went to a neighbor's house and called for repair service. Monday when nothing had happened I went into the GTE Store in the Whittwood mall. They told me that wasn't their department, and I used their phone to inquire again. They told me they had had some massive cable failures and would not be able to get to me until Wednesday. If they don't get it repaired by tomorrow, I'm going to become a little more difficult to get along with. Of course in an emergency we can use Craig's phone, but I couldn't seem to get the 310 area 611 from his phone. There was a number in the phone book that said to call it if you were out of the area. Craig's phone is a 714 area code and I tried it, and got nothing but a recorded Spanish language message. Ye gods, I thought this was the United States — an English-speaking country.

I'll sign off for now. Hope you all enjoy your trip to New Orleans.

      Love, Grandpa
